This is the story of a very special Bermuda Bag!  (The one shown.)

One day I received an e-mail from a young man .
He had a question:
" Hi, I'm hoping you can give me some guidance. As a wedding gift for my fiance, I am trying to restore a bermuda bag that belonged to her mother. Can you tell me where I can get replacement handles for the Bermuda Bags? Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated."

After getting that e-mail my first thought was Wow, any guy that wants to do something this special for his fiance is a very special person himself.  As it turns out his fiance's mother carried this bag on her honeymoon as well.

After several e-mails back and forth we decided we could probably help restore the bag so we asked him to send us everything, the chewed up handle with the liner and cover too so...   There it began the story of our restoration of a beautiful old Bermuda bag.

As soon as I saw this bag I knew it wasn't an ordinary 'old' Bermuda bag.  The bag had been all hand made  years ago.  The handle had been chewed up by the family dog but it was still obvious that the bag had enjoyed many days of use.  The liner had been hand sewn onto the handle and the liner actually had a lining with a tiny little pocket in it, something I have never seen.   It was missing buttons but I made a trip to the fabric store and luckily I was able to find buttons closely matching those on the bag .
The bag cover was Irish Linen Eyelet fabric with scalloped edges. Whoever made it did it by hand. All the stitches were hand sewn.  It too showed many days of use but was beautiful.

What we did:
We had to cut down one of our hand made handles in width and in depth to fit the liner.  Then we rewaxed our handle where it had been cut.  Then we hinged our 'new' handle.  Next the liner had to come off the chewed up handle and the new buttons sewn on to it.  Then it was time for it to be re-attached to it's new handle.  Once that was done I knew I couldn't just send the bag back without washing that beautiful cover.  So a cold water hand wash did the trick and now it's looking good as new.  It's just beautiful.

The pictures show the bag After it's restoration and Before, in it's original condition.
